Leading Research Projects

1.     Meso-scale studies  for measuring Greenhouse gas emissions from liquid dairy manure

Bioenvrionmental Engineering Center

Developed research questions and experimental design.

Implemented and managed multi-month study.

Managed 3 technicians (Dalhousie University) and co-ordinated with 2 service laboratories (Harlow Institute at Dalhousie University, and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada internal service laboratory).

Organised and analysed methane, nitrous oxide, and ammonia emission data, manure composition data, and weather/climate data.

Results were presented results at 2 conferences and 2 journal articles are currently under review with another in the writing stage.

May 2016 – Dec 2018

2.     Bio-methane potential laboratory incubations for quantifying greenhouse gas reductions from liquid dairy manure acidification

BMP Studies

Developed research questions and experimental design.

Ordered equipment and materials; set-up and tested equipment and methods prior to study.

Managed 2 undergraduate students and co-ordinated with an Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada internal service laboratory.

Organised and analysed methane emission, and manure composition data.

Results were presented at an international conference and a journal article is currently in the writing stage.

Nov 2017 – May 2018

3.      Nitrate leaching from soils with legume included in dairy crop rotation

Nitrate Field Run-Off

Organised and implemented leachate sampling from installed lysimeters and tile drains.

Co-ordinated with technicians at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada for sampling and laboratory analysis.

Organised and analysed nitrate data.

Nov 2015 – May 2016

4.     Land-based treatment system for treating on-farm potato wastewater

Wastewater Management

Developed research questions and methods.

Monitored system year-round for 2-yrs.

Co-ordinated with farmers and technicians at Agri-culture and Agri-Food Canada to organize sampling and analysis.

Set-up and maintained climate and water flow monitoring equipment.

Organised and analysed water contaminant concentration and load, and weather data.

Results were presented at 2 conferences and 2 journal articles were published from this research.

Sep 2012 – Aug 2014

5.     Supplementary treatment of potato wastewater for removal of colloidal suspended particles

Wastewater Management

Developed research questions, experimental design, and methods for 2 laboratory studies.

Ordered equipment and materials; set-up and tested equipment and methods prior to study.

Managed 2 undergraduate students and co-ordinated with an Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada internal service laboratory.

Worked with technician and researchers from an Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada microscopy lab to produce visual evidence of treatment differences.

Organised and analysed water contaminant concentration and load, and weather data.

Results were presented at a Canadian conference and 2 journal articles were published from this research.

Nov 2013 – May 2015
